About Leviathan

Have you ever wanted to automate your aquarium without paying the $800+ price that the most popular systems on the market sell for? Ever tried to make your own setup & grew frustrated with all of the wiring, troubleshooting, & issues? Me too! I knew there had to be a better way. I wanted to capture all the possible features in the tiniest form-factor possible. This lead me to create Leviathan!

Leviathan is a circuit board I designed that will allow you to easily monitor & control your aquarium. Paired with Reef-Pi, it can track temperature & pH, set your lights to dimming schedules, monitor & control your water level, control all your equipment on schedules, & much more.

Leviathan Features

The combinations of these simple features opens a TON of possibilities. such as feeding programs, auto water changes, & more!

  • Equipment outlet control- The main heart of the system, allowing you to control up to 12 individual outlets. These outlets can power your equipment like pumps, heaters, chillers, feeders, lights, filters, & more! Trigger their operation from the easy-to-use user interface, schedule them to run at a set time each day or month, or have them automatically respond to changes in parameters like temperature, water level, or pH!

  • Water level monitoring- Using any combination of the 4 water level sensor inputs (2 float switches, 2 optical level sensors), monitor the water level in your tank, sump, auto top-off reservoir, or fresh water containers! Combine water level monitoring with the equipment control feature to turn auto top-off pumps, perform automatic water changes, & more!

  • Temperature monitoring- Using any combination of the 3 temperature sensor inputs, monitor your tank, sump, reservoir, or ambient air temperature! The user interface plots & records historical temperature readings. Combine temperature monitoring with equipment outlet control to fine-tune your heater & chiller response to changes in temperature!

  • pH monitoring- Monitor the pH level of your tank without the need for separate test kits, strips, or hand-held meters! Just plug in a pH probe & let Leviathan do the rest. The user interface plots & records historical pH readings. Combine pH monitoring with dosing control to fine-tune your pH balance, or to alert you via email when it’s too low/high.

  • Lighting control- Using a simple 10V control signal, the lighting control feature allows you to dim & brighten your compatible LED lights on a set schedule throughout the day in order to mimic a sunrise/sunset cycle.

  • Chemical dosing- Control 2 peristaltic dosing pumps to accurately add solutions of chemicals such as Kalkwasser, pH buffer, Magnesium/Calcium supplements, & more! Either set a schedule for your dosing pumps to follow, or combine dosing with the pH monitoring feature in order to immediately respond to swings in tank parameters!

The User Interface

All Leviathan boards run the powerful open-source Reef-Pi software. you can check out the guide at Adafruit. Reef-Pi uses an easy to use interface to control & modify all the features Leviathan offers.

The main dashboard is fully customizable to show as much, or as little information as you desire.

The top bar allows you to access individual features of the program, in order to add new equipment, see more details for specific readings, create custom programs (like turning off pumps & filters for feeding), & much more!

The interface can be accessed from any device with an internet connection & a browser!

My Story

I'm a 28 year old Engineer living in Knoxville, TN who loves aquariums, but hates the worry & work that comes with keeping them maintained. When I discovered the open-source software Reef-Pi a couple years ago, I began working on my system. However, after adding only a few features, my build started becoming messy & hard to troubleshoot...

I knew there had to be a better way of doing this. So, I decided to begin designing a circuit board that would contain all the Reef-Pi features in a simple, easy to use package. After a few years of multiple design changes & prototypes, I wound up with a compact circuit board, as well as custom-fit enclosures & brackets.

After positive local feedback, I decided to run a Kickstarter campaign in order to make a few boards. It wound up being MUCH more popular than I imagined, receiving over 1,000% funding & coverage from multiple news sources. Leviathan is now running hundreds of aquariums all over the world, yours could be next!
